Maserati’s Quattroporte has an allure that other luxury saloons struggle to match. Perhaps it’s the sweeping lines and long, low bonnet that define the exterior form, or the traditional oval Maserati grille with its distinctive vertical fillets.
Compared with its rivals the Maserati somehow seems more hedonistic, more stylish. Yet beneath its bonnet this Quattroporte has a surprise – a 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine. Sense and sensuality. It’s a great combination.

OVERVIEW

From the triple air vents in the front wing to the triangular C-pillar, there are many thoughtful design cues to remind you of Maserati’s rich heritage. Yet it’s to the credit of the Maserati design team that the design of the Quattroporte Diesel manages to be both original and authentic. The snarling grille is dominated by the Maserati trident badge and flanked by LED-lined headlights which merge into the line of the front wings. The profile is clean, curvaceous and dominated by the strong bonnet line, emphasising the Maserati performance heritage.

The interior expresses contemporary luxury through the use of fine materials and restrained design. The dashboard, divided horizontally into three levels, features a broad central band across the entire width of the car, with the large Maserati Touch Control touchscreen display in the middle. It feels like every surface that’s not trimmed in fine wood is covered in soft Poltrona Frau® leather. Maserati claim the result is like an exclusive lounge, and the cabin of the Quattroporte is certainly a delightful place in which to spend a long journey.

TECHNOLOGY

Maserati’s first-ever diesel engine had a lot sceptics to convince. The advanced 3.0 litre V6 with its variable geometry turbocharger does so in style. Maximum power is 275 HP but – as ever with diesel engines – it’s torque that counts. In the Quattroporte diesel, peak torque is a massive 600 Nm, available between 2,000 and 2,600 rpm. As a result 0-60mph takes just 6.4 seconds while the fuel consumption is 45.5mpg combined. CO2 emissions are 163 g/km, more than respectable for a large luxury flagship. As a final flourish, the Quattroporte Diesel’s engineers have included ‘Active Sound’ generators in the exhaust tips to filter out any trace of diesel rumble and amplify the sportier notes. It may be diesel-powered, but this Quattroporte still sounds just as a Maserati should.
